Gokyo & Everest Base Camp
Typical 21 to 23 day treks aim to explore the Everest region
thoroughly. Starting with a flight to Lukla, one must allow about
three weeks among the high Sherpa villages and the alpine area
below the highest mountains in the world. The route follows the
Dudh Koshi to its source near the Gokyo lakes to the west of
Everest base camp.
Trekkers have an opportunity to climb Gokyo Peak (5483 m),
which affords excellent views of Cho Oyu (81564 m), Everest (8848
m), Makalu (8475 m) and others. From here the trek crosses the
Chyugima La pass into the Everest base camp area. After the vantage
point of Kala Patthar, which affords super views of Mt. Everest,
the route circles back via Thyangboche Monastery to Lukla for
the return flight back to Kathmandu.
Treks in this area can range from 7 to 45 days and are tougher
than around Annapurna but no less spectacular.
