Quieter Trails

The district of Dolpo in northwest Nepal has been closed to trekkers and climbers ever since 1973. Now the Nepalese authorities have declared the area between Jumla and Dhorpatan open to organized treks. This means that places like Tarakot, the Tarap valley, Phoksundo lake and the Kagmara La Pass are now accessible. Treks from Pokhara to Jumla (or vice versa) offer all the attractions of Himalayan trekking with the added bonus of a mountain culture rarely seen.

For the nature enthusiast there is the lure of the Phoksundo National Park - the largest protected Himalayan environment in Nepal. Treks in this area can also be combined with visits to Lake Rara National Park north of Jumla giving trekkers endless options for sustained trekking in this western mountain system.
