Kalinchowk
To the east of the Kodari road to the Chinese border runs
an uninhabited north-south ridge called after its highest peak,
Kalinchowk. This trail offers the best terrain off the beaten
track for visitors with limited time (of 2 to 3 or 5 to 10 days).
Spectacular views of Gaurishanker and Jugal Himal, dense forest,
much of it Rhododendron, Sherpa and Tamang villages where the
Shaman reigns supreme, are all to be seen in as little as 5 days
out Kathmandu.
A little more time presents the opportunity to combine the
ridge with the Tamang ridges of Saylung to the south, the fertile
territory of Dholaka to the east, or the high grazing-grounds
of Deodunga to the north. The easterly Dholaka is worth a visit
for its Newar villages, paper makers and its famous nunnery,
Bigu Gomba. The northerly Deodunga offers the opportunity to
share a camping spot with semi-nomadic yak herders. Apart from
Deodunga this whole area is suitable in all seasons except the
summer. In spring the area is so abundant with flowers and birdlife
that connoisseurs might consider spending several days at suitable
campsites taking ample time to enjoy the natural environment.
