Caving

Deep, deep down, in the belly of the Earth, you can experience another fascinating side of life in Nepal. These cool, damp, subterranean worlds have their own distinct ecosystems and wildlife. Some of the most popular caves in Nepal are located in Pokhara. The best known and most easily navigated is the Mahhendra Cave (right & below, left). For the more intrepid, there is the Bat Cave (below, centre & right) nearby which as its name suggests is home to a huge number of bats. Leaving the bat cave requires a climb through a narrow vertical passage and the locals say that as you clamber out, you are reborn.

It is sensible to take guided tours of both caves. The guide provides lights and is an expert in bats - frequently showing round specialists who have visited just to study them. There is also another cave containing a shrine in Pokhara (although photos are not allowed).

If you're interested in prices or want to organise a trip, let us know what you're looking for and we'll make enquiries to find the best option(s) on your behalf.
