Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

Return

Pashupatinath is the most important Hindu Temple in Nepal. It is named in honour of one of the sub-names of Lord Shiva who is the guardian deity of Nepali Hindus. The temple is located a few miles east of the centre of Kathmandu on the banks of the River Bagmati.

The Temple complex becomes the main focal point during festivals such as Bala Chaturdarsi in December and Maha Shivaratri each February. It is also where cremations take place (for example, members of the royal family are cremated here). At these times, thousands make their way to Pashupatinath from across the Indian sub-continent. At other times, worshippers, sadhus (wandering sages) and others can be found in the temple precincts. Although there is plenty to see for the visitor, only Hindus are permitted to go inside.
