Bouddhanath Stupa, Kathmandu

Return

Bouddhanath Stupa is believed to be the largest and most important Buddhist stupa in the world. It is built on a huge scale and thought to date back five hundred years.

The stupa is at the centre of Tibetan culture in Nepal. During bhuddist festivals such as Gunla (July to August) the stupa becomes a hive of activity as monks re-enacts a 'rains retreat' - a time for teaching, meditation and prayer following the arrival of the monsoon. At various times, it is the focus for pre-dawn prayers when the entire stupa is bathed in the light of thousands of butter lamps.

Buddhanath Stupa is located near the Chabail bus station and Jorpati Chowk.
