Kumari Ghar, Kathmandu

Return

The Kumari Ghar or the house of the living goddess was built in 1757 AD by the main ruler of Kathmandu at that time. It lies near Hanuman Dhoka. This house is a model of wooden arts with its windows depicting ornate and elaborate carvings.

The living Goddess Kumari or vestal virgin is selected from the priestly community or known as the Shaktya by an esoteric process.

She reigns as Kumari - even commanding homage from the reigning monarch and processes round the City in the annual chariot festival until the first sign of puberty sets in.
