Considerable savings can be made even after shipping costs and import duties by personally importing silk rugs, pashminas, jewellery, thankas and paintings, handicrafts, musical instruments and so on. It is least expensive to export by sea & overland although this can take around 7-9 weeks. More expensive is air cargo but quicker at around 2-3 weeks or courier which is the most expensive but the fastest delivery (around one week).

It is less expensive to have delivery made to one of the main airports in your home country but there will almost certainly be paperwork and in the UK, VAT to pay before collection is possible. There are agencies which will take care of this for you at a reasonable cost and deliver the goods to your door.
