Red Machhendranath Jatra

Until only a few decades ago, the Kathmandu Valley was mainly reliant on the monsoons bringing a sufficient rainfall for the vital rice crop. Each May, Red Machhendranath (a rain god) is worshipped throughout Patan's streets and palace complex which are lit up by candles at night. The air is filled with the smells of feasts being cooked

The image of Red Machhendranath is placed high on his chariot and pulled through Patan by his followers. The chariot is four wheeled, each representing a poweful Bhairab. The deity's image receives vermillion powder and rice. The king of serpents is asked for blessings and his jewelled vest is brought out on display to the crowds thronging the streets.
