Dasain

Dasain takes place around September or October, is the longest and the most popular festival in Nepal. Everyone stays home with their families, offices close and radio Nepal plays Desai music. The skies over kathmandu are filled with kites and the market places are busy as farmers bring buffaloes, goats and chickens to sell for sacrifice. Sacrifices are made on the night of Kal Ratri to the Goddess Durga to celebrate her victory over evil. on the day of Dashami, everyone dons new cloths and visits family elders to pay their respects and receive red tikas of vermillion paste on their foreheads.

In the following days of Desain, families and friends unite, feasts are consumed, blessings and gifts are exchanged. Further celebrations are held in the old Shah dynasty's palace at Gorkha. This festival ends with a full moon.
