Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri is held in February in honour of Shiva, one of Nepal's most popular Gods. 'Maha Shivaratri' means his 'Great Night' when his followers throughout the Indian sub-continent crowd into Pashupatinath Temple to worship him. Sadhus or wandering sages who emulate Shiva, rub ashes over their bodies, give lectures to disciples, meditate and practise yoga.

Devotees pray to Shiva's image inside the temple at midnight, having queued for up to six hours to see the image. Food is shared between neighbours and friends, bonfires are lit at night and the Pashipatinath complex and surrounding streets are filled with music, song and dance. The celebrations last for two days and one night.
