Travelling overland between Nepal and India (or Tibet, Bhutan etc.) can be done in a number of ways, depending on the size of your group, the budget and 'comfort requirement'. The main routes inside Nepal are by road whereas in India there is a choice of continuing by road or opting for the Indian railway experience. Kathmandu to New Delhi (budget)

There are good connections from Kathmandu, Pokhara and elsewhere in Nepal to the major destinations in India, Tibet & Bhutan. For the more intrepid travellers, walking, mountain biking or even rafting for part of the journey is possible. The least expensive (and least rapid) form of transport is provided by colourful buses, plying their way slowly along the main highway passes. For small groups, it is economical to hire a minibus and driver. For larger groups it is also relatively easy to hire a tourist coach and driver by the day. For individuals or groups up to four, it is quicker and more comfortable to hire a car and driver who can stop where you want to rest or take pictures, eat etc. The main bus routes extend to the border crossing points into India and it is easy to connect on the Indian side with the main railway stations and airports serving the rest of the country. The Indian railway experience is highly recommended, offering not just a slice of life going on in the areas you pass through but a picture of an entire way of life based around the railway system. You can get a travel agent in Nepal to give you a quote and make all of the necessary ticketing arrangements. (For details online, see the Tours Deals section.) |
