In Nepal, most foreign currencies and credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard & American Express are widely accepted in hotels, shops, restaurants etc. There are plenty of banks, exchange bureaux and hotel exchange counters who can cash travellers' cheques' & foreign currency in Kathmandu and Pokhara. ATMs are available (Standard Chartered Bank machines allow up to 400 GB Pounds to be withdrawn daily). For withdrawals using Switch, Visa or other credit cards, you'll need to use a bank or one of the larger exchange bureaux. A number of international banks have offices in Kathmandu.

If you are trekking into the mountains, you should change money in advance and ensure you've plenty of smaller denomination notes. (Avoid badly damaged notes since these may be refused on occasion.)

On departing Nepal, you can exchange your remaining Nepali Rupees for any foreign currency at Kathmandu Airport - up to 15% of the value of the currency you have exchanged into Nepali Ruppees whilst in Nepal. You will need to ask for a receipt each time you exchange currency and keep these to show at the Airport if you wish to do this.

Remember to retain NRs. 1100 for airport tax when departing Nepal by air.
