Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve
Dhorpatan covers 1,325 square km in the mid-west of Nepal,
extending from the middle mountains to the high Himalaya. Pasturelands
cover the higher elevations with fir, pine, birch, rhododendron,
hemlock, oak, juniper and spruce at lower elevations. The park
attracts sports hunters for the blue sheep and Himalayan tahr.
Other animals found here are the leopard, ghoral, serow, Himalayan
black bear, barking deer and wild boar. Pheasants and partidges
are also indigenous to the reserve. The majority of people in
the area come from the Magar, Thakali and Gurung ethnic groups.
Activities include game viewing and trophy hunting. (Please
don't ask us about hunting since our policy is to discourage
this more extreme exploitation of other species.) Accommodation
is in the form of camping.
To get there takes a four day walk from Baglung (which is
72 km from Pokhara by road).
The best time to visit is between March and April or October
and November. Between July and September it is the rainy season
and between December and february the climate is cold, windy
and snowy.
