Instructions for Setting Up Access to the E-mail Address which matches your main domain (like info@yourname.com). 1. What you need to get started A PC computer with modem & full internet access. (If you have an email address like yourname@go2kathmandu.com then these instructions do not apply to you.) 2. To prepare your machine to receive / send email Please follow these instructions exactly. Entering one wrong letter or number or putting a full stop in the wrong place is enough to prevent the software from working properly. where an entry is shown as info@yourname.com put your domain name in place of the 'yourname' part of the address. If you have ordered a different prefix (such as 'sales@yourname.com') then type in 'sales' instead of 'info'. If your computer is switched off, switch it on or if it is already on, close any programmes that are running on it (and if you are online, you should also disconnect from your internet service provider). Click the Start
button (bottom left of the screen) On most machines with Windows 95 / 98 / NT / 2000 installed, you should find amongst the list of programmes, an entry called Outlook Express. If it is not on the list, you may find it under Accessories or Communications. (If Outlook Express is NOT listed on your machine, see note below.) Click Outlook Express to start the programme If Outlook Express tries to go online, click Cancel and then the Work Offline button. If there is another screen saying Outlook Express could not check email, click the Hide Button. When the Outlook Express screen is showing, click Tools and then Accounts. This opens the Internet Accounts' window. In the top right corner, click Add and then Mail to open the Internet Connection Wizard' window. In the white box called Display name', type in your company name eg Hotel Paradiso and then click Next. In the following screen, select the I already have an email account I'd like to use' option and in the Email address box below, type in your email address (eg info@yourname.com) and then click Next. In the following E-mail Server Names' window, make sure the My incoming mail server is a POP3 server' is selected. Just below in the same window, in the Incoming mail...' box, type in: mail.go2kathmandu.com and in the box at the bottom called Outgoing mail...' type in: mail.go2kathmandu.com Then click Next. This closes the Internet Connection Wizard screen and returns you to the Internet Accounts screen. Click Close. This returns you to the main Outlook Express screen. Exit Outlook Express (by clicking the X in the top right of the screen. Restart your computer to make sure all the changes have taken effect. (If you had to install Outlook Express 5 and the installation routine did not require you to restart your machine, you should do so now.) 3. To test the new email address is working properly Log on to your usual Internet Service Provider. Once you are online, start Outlook Express (Start > Programs > Outlook Express). When it starts, Outlook Express should automatically check to see if there is any email. (In the grey box in the bottom right of the main Outlook Express screen, it should say Connecting' followed by Authorising' and then by either Receiving x messages of x' or Sending...' or No New Messages'. If the process worked correctly, in the bottom right of the screen, you should see either No New Messages' or 1 new message'. In case it does not do this, click the Send/Recv button (top right) to start the process. To check the software is working correctly, send yourself an email by pressing the New Mail button, in the top left of the main Outlook Express screen. In the screen that opens, it should show your email address in the From' box as for example: info@yourname.com In the To: box, type in: info@yourname.com As a further check to ensure the software is working correctly, in the CC: box, type in another email address you use such as: yourname@hotmail.com In the Main message box, type in some text, such as: Test number 1 Then click the Send button, top left. If the system is working correctly, you will see either a pop-up screen or in the bottom right of the main screen, a message saying connecting' followed by authorising' and then Sending mail'. Once the mail has been sent, the note in the bottom right of the Outlook Express screen, will return to the previous message (such as No new messages' etc). If all went smoothly, log off or surf elsewhere for 10 - 15 minutes and then go back on line and start Outlook Express to see whether your email has arrived. If instead, when checking for mail, sending or receiving emails, you got an error message, check the note on Troubleshooting below. Troubleshooting If when trying to Send / Receive emails using Outlook Express, you get an error or failure message, here are some suggestions for solving the problem. First, check the obvious things, like did you follow the instructions above exactly? Simply entering a single wrong letter or number is enough to stop the software working. Is the modem plugged into the telephone socket and is the machine logged onto an Internet Service Provider? (The machine should have a full internet connection', not just an 'email connection' for example.) If you can view web sites online then this should not be the problem. Do you have the right version of Outlook Express on your machine? (Version 5 is recommended). If you are online but when starting Outlook Express it does not automatically check for mail or send mail when you have pressed the Send button, click the Send/Recv button and watch for information on progress in the bottom right of the Outlook Express window. If this does not work, Exit Outlook Express and select No when it asks if you want to send any unsent messages. Then start Outlook Express again and if necessary, press the Send/Recv button again. If this does not work, try closing Outlook Express (select no to the question of whether to send unsent messages). Then go offline, wait a couple of minutes and then go back online, start Outlook Express and if necessary, click the Send/Recv button if the mail checking routine does not start automatically on starting Outlook Express. If your Internet Service Providers' connection is very slow, it is possible that your machine and its software are installed correctly but that the delay of the information getting through CNET etc is so great that the server in Europe has timed out. In other words, the email computer in Europe which handles your email has waited so long for a reply to reach it through CNET or another service provider that the European machine has assumed the user has stopped trying to read / send their email for example by switching off Outlook Express in the middle of a routine or if the computer stopped working because of a power cut. The server computer in Europe will react to a long delay by closing the email connection to ensure there is no security risk from criminals trying to break into other people's email. If this is the cause of the problem, we may be able to adjust the time out setting on the European server to prevent delays on some Asian servers from stopping the process. When in Pokhara, I found the best time to connect with CNET was about 11pm in the evening. If, after trying the suggestions above 3 or 4 times, the software is still not working, double-click the grey rectangular box in the furthest bottom right corner of Outlook Express to open a screen which gives details of the progress of connecting, authorising and sending / receiving mail. This screen also shows failure notices which contain technical error messages. These may give an indication of the problem in the text (such as timed out' or could not connect' or did not recognise server name' etc). We'll need both the text and the codings with them to find out the exact cause of any problem. If you block and paste these error messages into an email or fax to us, we can find out exactly what the problem is. To block & paste, select all the text in the error message window of Outlook Express with the mouse, hold down the Ctrl button and with it held down, press the letter C (ie Ctrl+C). Then in a word processor, click where you want the information to go on the page and press Ctrl+V. You can print and fax the details to us at 0044 1223 847414 or email them to cmb@go2kathmandu.com and we'll look into resolving the problem as swiftly as possible. If Outlook Express is NOT installed on your machine You need to install a copy of Microsoft Outlook Express (release 5) on your machine. If you have the Windows 95 / 98 / NT / 2000 CD Rom that came with your machine, you should find a copy on that. Alternatively, you should be able to download a copy of Outlook Express from the main Microsoft web site at www.microsoft.com Once you have the programme installed on your machine, follow the instructions above. |
