Most tour packages to Chitwan include a variety of cultural
events, including the stick dance performed by the local Tharu
tribes people. The drums, chanting and clacking of sticks was
used in ancient times to project a wall of noise to ward off
potential predators. Performed at night, with the sounds of the
jungle all around, the Tharu dances are little different to those
performed through the centuries to fend off danger.
Canoe trips offer a great chance to see crocadiles, dolphins
and a host of wildlife along the Rapti and Rue rivers. A trip
to the local elephant breeding station is also well worthwhile
as are safaris on elephant back or by jeep.
